UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings after Spain captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri sang “Gibraltar is Spanish” during their European Championship celebrations.
The European football association announced on Friday that it would appoint an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate the singing and assess whether it violated disciplinary rules.
Spain held a victory celebration in Madrid on Monday, with leading players including Manchester City's Morata and Rodri taking to the stage to chant chants about Gibraltar, a British territory at the southern tip of Spain, in front of a large crowd.
The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with UEFA on Thursday against the chant, describing it as deeply offensive to Gibraltarians.
Spain had ceded Gibraltar to Great Britain in 1713, but had long demanded its return.
