Earlier on Friday, the IT systems of airports and airlines were also affected by a global outage that left planes grounded and disrupted the travel plans of thousands of passengers.

“Due to strong winds, Airservices Australia is operating our east-west runway, which may cause delays throughout the afternoon,” a Sydney Airport spokesman said.

“Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the status of their flight.”
