World News Sharks smash terrible Tigers in 52-point NRL rout Blog

Cronulla have put a horror month behind them, devastating the Wests Tigers in a 58-6 NRL loss.

In their first appearance since halfback Nicho Hynes was sidelined for eight weeks with an ankle injury, the Sharks showed a ruthless sharpness that had been lacking during their previous run of three consecutive losses.

Provisional semi-final pairing Brayden Trindall and Daniel Atkinson impressed on Friday as winger Ronaldo Mulitalo scored his first NRL hat-trick in front of 10,912 spectators at Shark Park.

The Tigers posed a brief threat in the first half, but a penalty to Api Koroisau in the 17th minute sparked Cronulla’s 10-try defeat.

Koroisau was unable to finish the second half, probably due to a calf injury.

Tigers’ sought-after prop Stefano Utoikamanu once again struggled to score for Benji Marshall’s side, managing just 75 metres and missing four tackles in another disappointing performance.

The Tigers remain bottom of the NRL table, having conceded 138 points in their last three games, with Marshall’s men getting off to the worst possible start when Kayal Iro was knocked off inside two minutes.

Solomona Faataape fought back, but then the Sharks began to show their quality as Mulitalo charged forward from deep in his own half of the court and finished the next set in the corner.

Koroisau was sent to the penalty box as the Sharks launched another attack and the Tigers’ hooker jumped out at the marker to clear the ball.

Referee Adam Gee claimed that Tigers captain Koroisau had deliberately not been in a straight line when the goal was conceded and sent him to the penalty box for a deliberate foul. Sione Katoa was penalised shortly afterwards.

Back at 13, the Tigers knocked on Cronulla’s line in three straight sets as halftime approached.

But their attack was leaderless and Jesse Ramien intercepted a pass from Aiden Sezer. Katoa completed the same set and gave the home team a 24-6 lead at halftime.

From then on, things went worse and worse for the guests, as Koroisau, Utoikamanu and back-row striker Alex Seyfarth were all unable to finish the game.

Cronulla scored six tries in the second half, with Mulitalo scoring two of them, while Briton Nikora, Braden Hamlin-Uele and Trindall also scored.
