World News Rescuers find remains thought to be missing UK teen Blog

Spanish rescue teams have found human remains in Tenerife in the area where British teenager Jay Slater disappeared nearly a month ago. Police said the evidence strongly suggests the remains are those of the teenager.

The Guardia Civil police said in a statement that his death may have been the result of an accident in the difficult-to-access mountain area, but that the autopsy would determine whether it was an accident.

Slater, 19, disappeared on June 17 and his phone was last tracked to the Masca Gorge in a remote national park in the Canary Islands.

In a statement issued to Sky News, police said: “The Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group has found the lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of continuous searching.”

“Given the complexity of the case, the discovery was only possible thanks to the relentless and discreet search carried out by the Guardia Civil during those 29 days, while protecting the natural space so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers.

“All indications suggest that this could be the young British man who has been missing since June 17 due to a lack of clear identification.

“Initial investigations suggest that he may have suffered a fall in the inaccessible area where he was found.”

The search in the village of Masca, near Slater’s last known whereabouts, took place in a steep, rocky area with ravines, paths and trails.
