Prince William has joined in the praise of Gareth Southgate, who resigned as England manager after leading the team to a second consecutive defeat in the European Championship final.
“Gareth, I want to thank you – not as President of the English Football Association (FA), but as an England fan,” the British heir to the throne posted on social media.
“Thank you for building a team that will stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world in 2024. Thank you for showing humility, compassion and true leadership under the greatest pressure and scrutiny.
“And thank you for being in a class of your own all around. You should be incredibly proud of what you have achieved. W.”
The new British Prime Minister also acknowledged the 53-year-old’s departure, although the English Football Association would have liked him to continue despite the defeat against Spain on Sunday.
“Gareth’s time as England manager will be remembered as the time when he brought back the hope and faith the country had so long craved,” said Sir Keir Starmer.
“He and his teams have given us so much. No one will forget the run to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup or our first two finals at the European Championships. The victories over Germany and Denmark at Wembley in 2021 were hugely gratifying and came just as spectators were allowed back into stadiums after the dark days of Covid.
“Gareth also brought a deeper understanding of what this job means and what it stands for. In turbulent times, he has been a sensitive spokesman for events that go far beyond football.
“He was a mentor to our brilliant young talents. And every step of the way, he carried the country’s dreams with dignity and honor.”
“I join everyone today in thanking Gareth and his team for all they have achieved and for laying the foundations for future success.”
David Beckham was one of numerous former and current players who joined in the compliments.
“Not only have you been one of our most successful coaches, but you have done so with elegance. Congratulations to you and your staff,” said the former England captain.
