World News Philipsen sprints home as Pogacar retains control Blog

Jasper Philipsen won the 13th stage of the Tour de France in a sprint, while two-time champion Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey.

A few hundred meters before the finish line, several drivers crashed, but Pogacar, who was just ahead of him, was able to avoid the pile-up.

After three and a half hours, Philipsen beat fellow Belgian Wout van Aert and German Pascal Ackermann to secure his second stage win this month.

The flat course earned the sprinters valuable points in the battle for the green jersey and led the peloton over a 165-kilometer route from Agen to the southwestern city of Pau on the northern edge of the Pyrenees.

Biniam Girmay of Eritrea, who has won three stages so far, finished fourth and retained the green jersey.

Primoz Roglic, the 2020 runner-up behind fellow Slovenian Pogacar, retired a day before the stage after a crash.

Saturday’s 14th stage starts in Pau and heads into the mountains, where two huge climbs await on the 152km grueling route to Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet.
