Penrith showed its championship qualities and fought back to a 14-6 victory against Brisbane, despite Reece Walsh playing his best game of the season.

Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny, who pulled off a brilliant save, sealed the deal with a try in the 69th minute at Suncorp Stadium.

The encounter had the character of revenge for a grand final and both teams showed an intensity, passion and physicality that goes beyond what is seen in a regular NRL game.

The Broncos lost halfback Jock Madden in the 43rd minute due to a thigh injury, but did not let this deter them and suffered their fifth defeat in a row.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the 11th minute when substitute Jack Cole fired over the goal with his first touch after winger Daine Laurie left the field with a hamstring injury.

With a defensive approach and a great attitude, the Broncos showed in front of 42,433 fans that they were up to the challenge.

The home team defended with vigor and drive and kept the Panthers at bay set after set at the beginning.

It wasn’t just the forwards who were leading the way. Winger Corey Oates rolled over center Izack Tago. Hooker Billy Walters and defenseman Walsh rammed Cole shortly afterwards and got him out of the line of fire.

Walsh then lit up the stadium as he outpaced Tago, Paul Alamoti and Dylan Edwards in a 42-metre blitz to the goal line. It was a brilliant moment and complemented a wonderful half from the Broncos’ No.1, who also kicked smartly in the overall game.

He continued to shine in the second half with a performance that could well shape his season.

Penrith had their own moment of brilliance in the opening stanza after a powerful run from prop Moses Leota. They then turned the ball wide, with front-rounder James Fisher-Harris emerging from nowhere to throw a cut-out pass and Cole completing the nifty move.

The Panthers, trailing 4-6 at halftime, were on the defensive in the second half as second-row Liam Martin grabbed a bomb throw from Jarome Luai. Forward Lindsay Smith assisted and laid on a great grubber for winger Brian To’o, who scored in the 47th minute.

The three-time defending champions then continued to drive things up the middle, increasing the intensity as the Broncos tired.

When Kenny dug in, it was the final nail in the Broncos’ coffin.

Brisbane centre Selwyn Cobbo showed a strong performance on the ball and a powerful defence to secure a place in Queensland’s second half.
