US President Joe Biden must decide quickly whether to remain in the race for the White House in 2024, said former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but declined to comment definitively on whether she would like him to run.

In an opinion piece published in the New York Times on Wednesday, Hollywood star George Clooney, a Democrat who co-hosted a fundraiser for Biden last month, withdrew his support.

Pelosi’s remarks ignored Biden’s repeated assurances that he was staying in the race and suggested he could face a new wave of doubts from his fellow Democrats.

For nearly two weeks, Biden, 81, tried to quell defections from Democratic lawmakers, donors and other allies who feared he might lose the Nov. 5 vote to 78-year-old Republican Donald Trump after Biden’s hesitant performance at the June 27 debate.

The president has repeatedly stressed that he will be the Democratic candidate and believes he can beat Trump.

Pelosi said on MSNBC that she had urged her colleagues on Capitol Hill who had concerns about Biden not to raise them as he receives NATO leaders in Washington, DC this week.

“I’ve told everyone: Let’s just wait and see. Whatever you think, tell someone privately, but you don’t have to put it on the table until we see how it goes this week,” she said, calling Biden’s sharp remarks at the NATO summit on Tuesday “spectacular.”

She declined to comment definitively on whether she would support Biden’s candidacy.

“I want him to do whatever he decides,” she said.

“We all encourage him to make this decision because time is running out.”

When asked for comment, Biden’s campaign referred to a letter Biden sent to congressional Democrats saying he was “determined” to stay in the race and beat Trump.

Reference was also made to Pelosi’s remark on Tuesday that she had “always stood behind Biden.”

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal echoed Pelosi’s message later Wednesday, saying he was “deeply concerned” about Biden’s ability to win the race.

In his commentary, Clooney wrote: “It’s devastating to have to say this, but the Joe Biden I was with at the fundraiser three weeks ago was not the ‘big damn thing’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw at the debate,” Clooney wrote.

“With this president, we will not win in November. Moreover, we will not win the House of Representatives and we will lose the Senate.”

Hollywood is often referred to as the “Democratic ATM” and has always been a significant source of donations for the party.

Clooney’s event, co-hosted with actress Julia Roberts, raised more than $30 million ($44 million Australian dollars), making it the largest Democratic fundraiser in history, according to Biden’s campaign.

Following Biden’s appearance at the debate, several Hollywood donors called on the president to end his campaign.

Biden was greeted with thunderous applause when he met with a group of union leaders, a key part of his political base, on Wednesday. The union was attending a meeting of the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO in Washington DC to discuss “their shared commitment to defeating Donald Trump,” the Biden campaign said.

At the meeting, Biden cited high rents, expensive food prices and a lack of housing as problems that need to be addressed in the future.

There are “a whole host of things we will accomplish with your help in a second term,” Biden said.

“Thanks to the unions, we are in a better position than any other country in the world to shape the rest of the 21st century.”

Democrats in Congress remain deeply divided over whether to join Biden or push him to resign due to ongoing doubts about his health and gunshot wound.

Biden has stated that he is qualified for the service but understands the questions.

Some have expressed concern that Biden’s continued leadership on the ballot could cost the party the White House and both houses of Congress in November.

But public defectors still make up only a small portion of the 213 Democratic-leaning members of the House of Representatives, and party leadership continues to publicly support Biden.

No member of the Senate has publicly advocated that Biden should resign, although Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado said Tuesday he does not believe Biden can beat Trump.
