Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension until 2026, the Premier League club announced.
The Dutchman won two consecutive trophies in his first two years at Old Trafford, but his position was uncertain after leading the club to their worst league finish in 34 years last season.
Following a performance review, United decided to keep ten Hag and he agreed to a one-year extension to his current contract, which was due to expire at the end of the next season.
“Looking back over the past two years, we can look back with pride on two trophies and many examples of progress since I joined,” said ten Hag.
“However, we must also be aware that there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us to reach the level expected of Manchester United, which means we have to fight for English and European titles.”
“In my discussions with the club, we are completely united in our vision for achieving these goals and we are all firmly committed to pursuing this path together.”
Ten Hag joined United from Ajax in 2022 and won the League Cup in his first year in England, followed by victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final last season.
He remains in office despite new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe seeking to fundamentally restructure United’s football operations. The British billionaire bought a 27.7 percent stake in the club in February and hired a new CEO, sporting director and technical director to bring the 20-time English champions back to the top of European football.
“With two trophies in the last two seasons, Erik has cemented his record as one of the most consistent and successful managers in European football,” said United sporting director Dan Ashworth.
“The club’s review of last season has highlighted areas for improvement, but it was also clear that Erik is the best partner for us to work with to improve standards and results.
“This group of players and staff have already shown that they are capable of competing and winning at the highest level. Now we need to do that even more consistently.”
“With our football leadership team now strengthened, we look forward to working hand in hand with Erik to achieve our shared goals for this football club.”
