The American owner of Premier League club Liverpool wants to buy French club Bordeaux to expand its football portfolio.
Bordeaux said on Tuesday that the plan to sell a majority stake to Fenway Sports Group had been submitted to the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion, which is responsible for the finances of French clubs.
“We are working hand in hand with them as we continue negotiations and due diligence,” Bordeaux said in a statement.
Bordeaux, six-time French champions, most recently in 2009, is a distressed asset.
They are appealing against the club’s relegation decision to the 3rd division and want to secure security for the financing of the next season.
Liverpool announced in March that FSG, which has owned the club since 2010, wants to buy another football club.
