King Charles has congratulated the England national football team on reaching the final of the 2024 European Championship, but urged them to avoid further last-minute drama.
In a message to Gareth Southgate’s team following the Three Lions’ 2-1 win over the Netherlands, Charles conveyed the royal family’s “very best wishes” and “warmest congratulations” to the players.
However, the King joked about the recent dramas England fans have had to endure, including a last-minute equaliser in the round of 16 against Slovakia and a penalty win against Switzerland in the quarter-finals, and urged fans to watch their nation’s blood pressure in the final against Spain.
“My wife and I join the whole family in congratulating you on reaching the final of the UEFA European Championship – and sending you our very best wishes for Sunday’s match,” he said.
“If I may encourage you to secure victory before any last-minute wonder goals or another penalty drama occur, I am sure the strain on the nation’s collective heartbeat and blood pressure would be greatly reduced!
“Good luck, England.”
This came after further drama in the semi-final, when Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins scored the decisive goal in extra time to take the team through.
The Three Lions fell behind after seven minutes through a goal from Xavi Simons, but a controversial penalty awarded by the video referee from Harry Kane equalised ten minutes later.
The Prince of Wales, who is a Villa fan, also congratulated England and praised Watkins in a message on social media.
“What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! Finalists of #EURO2024,” he said.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who watched part of the match during a NATO summit in Washington DC, has confirmed that he will attend Sunday’s final in Berlin.
