A notorious murderer who spent decades in prison for brutally stabbing a sex worker to death in a bloody killing spree has attacked a prison guard.
Mert Ney shocked Sydney in August 2019 when he murdered Michaela Dunn, running through the streets with a knife in his hand and stabbing another woman before being subdued by brave Good Samaritans.
He was sentenced to more than 40 years in prison. Supreme Court Justice Peter Johnson described his actions as a “cruel, brutal and horrific attack without cause”.
Ney will be housed in the state’s most secure prison, the Goulburn Supermax.
Ney is believed to have punched a correctional officer in an incident on Friday morning.
The officer was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Ney was sentenced to 44 years in prison with 33 years of probation for the murder of Michaela Dunn.
His earliest possible release date was reduced by three years after he successfully appealed to the Court of Criminal Appeal in October last year.
In October 2021, Ney was sentenced to 15 months in prison for assaulting a correctional officer in prison.
He was also found guilty and sentenced to twelve months in prison for setting fire to his cell.
In February last year, Ney was sentenced to 15 months in prison for pouring boiling water on a fellow inmate.
There’s more to come.
