Twelve months after becoming the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon singles, Marketa Vondrousova has made history again – but not to her delight.

The Czech is the first defending champion this century to be beaten in the opening round and only the second since the start of the Open Era in 1968.

Vondrousova, who was seeded sixth this year, was beaten by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2.

The 21-year-old Spaniard is ranked 83rd in the world, the highest ranking of his career so far.

She never seemed comfortable on the same Centre Court where she lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish last July.

She may still be feeling the after-effects of a fall during the warm-up tournament in Berlin last month in which she injured her hip.

The last champion to be defeated at the first hurdle was Steffi Graf, who lost to Lori McNeil in 1994.

Vondrousova’s predecessor in the title fight, Elena Rybakina, defeated Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse comfortably with 6:3 and 6:1.

Jessica Pegula, seeded fifth, also had an easy win, beating her American compatriot Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-0.
