No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana has joined the Cleveland Guardians, signing a contract worth $13.4 million before he was officially introduced by the franchise.
Bazzana was selected first overall by Oregon State in the 2024 MLB Draft last week. The No. 1 draft slot was valued at over $15 million, and the Cincinnati Reds' agreement with No. 2 pick Chase Burns totaled $13.8 million.
Bazzana, the 2024 Pac-12 Player of the Year, hit .407 with 28 home runs and 66 RBIs for the Beavers, who advanced to a super regional as the No. 15 seed nationally before losing a three-game series to second-seeded Kentucky.
Bazzana is the first second baseman and the first Australian to be selected No. 1. He set a single-season record for Oregon State in 2024 by scoring 84 runs and achieving a .911 slugging average.
He also stole 16 bases and had an on-base percentage of .568 last season, earning him a unanimous first-team All-America honor.
Bazzana was an avid cricketer as a child and even captained his Turramurra High School team to its first state championship.
He started playing baseball in elementary school and switched from cricket to baseball at 15.
At 15 years old, Bazzana was by far the youngest in the Australian Baseball League when he made his debut for the Sydney Blue Sox in 2018.
He then moved to America to play college baseball for the Oregon Beavers.
It was the first time Cleveland was selected first, and they earned it after winning the draft lottery despite not having the worst regular-season record last year.
