German striker Thomas Müller has announced his retirement from international football.
The Bayern Munich star’s decision came in the wake of Germany’s defeat to eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship.
The 34-year-old made his first international appearance in 2010 and subsequently made 131 appearances for his country, scoring 45 goals.
Müller, who won the World Cup Golden Boot in 2010 and helped Germany win the tournament four years later, posted on social media platform X: “Time to say goodbye.”
In a farewell video on YouTube, Müller added: “It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together.”
“When I played my first international match over 14 years ago, I could never have imagined all of this in my wildest dreams. I would like to thank all the fans and my teammates in the national team for their support over the years. Take the excitement and joy of this European Championship home with you.”
His last appearance for Germany was a brief substitute appearance against Spain, when Mikel Merino scored the winning goal for the hosts in extra time and eliminated them from the competition.
Müller ends his international career as his country’s third most capped player behind Lothar Matthäus and Miroslav Klose.
His announcement comes after teammate Toni Kroos announced that he would end his football career at the end of the tournament.
