World News France beat Portugal in shootout to advance in Euros Blog

France beat Portugal 5-3 on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the European Championship, ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s bid to win the title in his final appearance at the tournament.

With the match tied 0-0 after extra time, Joao Felix hit the post with a penalty in the shootout and Theo Hernández converted the decisive shot.

Portugal had the best chances of winning during regular time and forced goalkeeper Mike Maignan to make two brilliant saves, first against Bruno Fernandes (61′) and then against Vitinha (63′).

But the score remained 0-0 after extra time, and the Portuguese had to go to a penalty shootout for the second time in a row after beating Slovenia 3-0 in the round of 16.

France lost on penalties in their last two major tournaments – in the round of 16 of the 2021 European Championship and in the final of the 2022 World Cup.

Ronaldo, 39, said this was his sixth and final European Championship, a record.

France will play against Spain in the semi-finals after beating Germany in extra time in Stuttgart.
