World News Elvis Smylie to make major championship debut at British Open after making it through qualifying Blog

Queenslander Elvis Smylie said he had “goosebumps” after securing his first major title at the British Open at Royal Troon, bringing the number of Australians in the field to six.

Smylie, the son of Australian tennis legend Liz, was one of 12 Australians who took part in qualifying tournaments at four venues but the only one to secure his place.

Playing at the Royal Cinque Ports in Great Britain, the 22-year-old left-hander was desperate to finish in the top four, but at a crucial moment he managed rounds of 67-74 to finish tied for second with his opponent.

While his mother was acting as a tennis commentator at Wimbledon, Smylie said his father would also be on his way to England in two weeks to support him.

“Just saying that I have qualified for The Open gives me goosebumps,” he said.

“The last time I was at The Open was at Royal Troon in 2016 when I was 14 years old. Eight years ago I was there as a spectator and now I’m back as a participant – I don’t know what to say. I just can’t wait to experience the experience.

“I’ve already spoken to my dad who is in Australia via FaceTime and he said he’s going to book a flight. My mum is already here commentating on Wimbledon, so everyone will come and watch me in Troon. I’m very excited.”

Smylie, along with Cam Smith, Min Woo Lee, Adam Scott, Jasper Stubbs and Jason Day, will compete in the final major of the year, which begins on July 18.
