Former US President Donald Trump has called for unity after escaping an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania that left one participant dead and two others seriously injured.
In his second statement, Trump offered his prayers for all those affected by the attack, as he narrowly escaped with his life on Saturday (local time) when a bullet from a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle “pierced” his upper right ear.
“I thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers yesterday, because it was only God who prevented the unthinkable,” the 78-year-old said on his platform TruthSocial.
“We will NOT BE AFRAID, but instead will remain true to our faith and defy evil.
“Our condolences go out to the other victims and their families.”
The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was walking to school less than an hour down the road from the Butler Farm Showgrounds, where the rally was held.
Crooks was shot after he was discovered with a rifle on a rooftop about 450 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking.
Shots fired by Crooks killed one participant and injured two others. Both were reportedly in critical condition.
“We pray for the recovery of those injured and keep in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was killed in such a cruel manner,” Trump continued.
“At this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united and show our true character as Americans, remain strong and determined, and not allow evil to win.”
“I truly love our country and love all of you and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin.”
