World News Colombian FA blame Copa security for president’s arrest Blog

The Colombian Football Federation has blamed the private security service at the Copa America final for the incident that led to the arrest of the president and his son, but also apologized to the organizers for the chaotic scenes at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Both 71-year-old association president Ramon Jeserun and his 43-year-old son Ramon Jamil were arrested after an altercation at the stadium shortly after midnight, according to Miami police reports, which charged both men with assault.

Jeserun and his son were charged after fighting with guards in a tunnel. The federation (FCF) said they were simply trying to get to the awards ceremony following Argentina’s victory over Colombia in Miami, but were prevented from doing so by heightened security measures.

“Employees of the stadium’s private security service prevented most members of the Colombian delegation from accessing the field in a timely and direct manner, despite being duly identified with the organization’s official badge,” the FCF said in a statement.

The FCF added that tensions were high when they were not allowed through. According to police, Jeserun’s son grabbed the security guard by the neck and pulled him to the ground, where he punched him and kicked him in the head.

“Ramon Jesurun, driven by his paternal instinct … rushed to complain about what had happened, but was ultimately overwhelmed by the situation, as he was in the hallway with his wife, sons, daughters and minor grandchildren,” the FCF added.

“As the governing body of Colombian football, we regret this incident and would like to express our apologies to the tournament organizers, the host country and the people affected.

“For his part, President Jesurun deeply regrets these incidents which should never have happened and which led to a fatherly and instinctive act to protect his son and his family.”

The final had previously started more than an hour late after the police imposed a curfew and hundreds of fans were not allowed to enter the stadium.

Dozens of fans were arrested and more than 50 people were ejected from the venue after fans without tickets attempted to enter the stadium.

Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the match that was postponed due to the chaos.
