World News Colombia hold Brazil, top Group D at Copa America Blog

Brazil qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa America with an action-packed 1-1 draw against Colombia in California.

Colombia, who finished first in Group D with seven points, will face Panama in the quarter-finals, while second-placed Brazil will face Group C winners Uruguay.

In a hectic first fifteen minutes at Levi’s Stadium on Tuesday, Colombia missed a goal by inches when James Rodriguez hit the crossbar before Raphinha fired a sublime free-kick into the top corner to put Brazil ahead in the 12th minute.

Colombia’s goal from Davinson Sanchez was disallowed for offside before Daniel Munoz equalised in first-half stoppage time by finishing off striker Jhon Cordoba’s brilliant through ball.

Despite the scorching California heat, neither team let up the intensity after the break. Raphinha fired a free kick just wide and Andreas Pereira tested Camilo Vargas with a long-range effort, but Colombia held on to the draw and extend their unbeaten streak to 26 games.

In Texas, Costa Rica beat Paraguay 2-1 but did not advance.

Costa Rica (four points) needed good results and a significant improvement in goal difference to qualify, and the team wasted no time scoring a 2-0 goal within seven minutes through captain Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer.

But their hopes of progressing faded ten minutes into the second half when Mathias Villasanti dribbled into the box and set up Ramon Sosa, who fired the ball into the top corner to score his first goal for Paraguay (zero points).
