Irish players Craig Casey and Dan Sheehan will not be able to take part in Saturday’s second test against South Africa in Durban due to injury.
Scrum-half Casey will miss the game due to a concussion sustained in a foul on former Munster teammate RG Snyman, which saw him leave the field on a stretcher.
Leinster hooker Sheehan is believed to have torn a ligament in his left knee during a tackle against Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth.
Ulster half-back Nathan Doak and Connacht striker Dave Heffernan were therefore called up to the squad.
A statement from the Irish Rugby Football Union said: “Following medical examinations following Saturday’s opening Test, Irish management can confirm that neither Craig Casey (concussion) nor Dan Sheehan (left knee) will participate in the South African series which concludes in Durban next Saturday.”
“Connacht hooker Dave Heffernan and Ulster scrum-half Nathan Doak have been called up and the duo have joined the team in Durban.”
Ireland lost 20-27 to the world champions in Pretoria on Saturday, despite scoring two tries in the final six minutes and the hosts surviving a concentrated comeback.
