World News Bulldogs beat Cats in the wet to continue finals push Blog

The Western Bulldogs recorded an impressive 47-point victory over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium to end the Cats' three-game winning streak and continue their push towards the AFL top eight.

A week after their victory over Carlton, Luke Beveridge's charges coped best with the wet conditions at GMHBA Stadium, leading from start to finish and claiming a 13.17 (95) to 7.6 (48) victory in front of 27,967 fans.

Adam Treloar (31 possessions, three goals) and Ed Richards (28 possessions, two goals) put in an outstanding performance as the Bulldogs crushed Geelong in the competition.

Born-again defender Rory Lobb held Jeremy Cameron to one goal and six touches and collected 21 possessions, 14 interceptions and nine markers of his own while brilliantly leading the Bulldogs' hard-working defense.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan scored four goals and Aaron Naughton added two in his return.

Geelong player Tom Stewart (25 ball contacts) was tough as usual, and Max Holmes (23 ball contacts) also fought his way through the game.

The Bulldogs are in ninth place, two points off the finals places, while Geelong are fourth and could slip further by the end of the round after their third loss at GMHBA Stadium this season.

Geelong made two last-minute changes, taking off Shannon Neale and Tom Atkins and bringing on Ted Clohesy (substitute) and Brandan Parfitt.

It was a chaotic affair in soggy, wet weather.

Beveridge had to wipe down the window of his coach's box as it had fogged up with condensation towards the end of the first quarter.

Ugle-Hagan opened the scoring with an impressive long-range shot before Sam Darcy added another.

At halftime, Geelong were goalless and the Dogs had a 13-point lead.

Richards scored another goal early in the second quarter with a brilliant volley, firing the ball home with his left foot following a stoppage.

Tyson Stengle and Oliver Henry gave Geelong some much-needed stability midway through their second season.

But the Bulldogs still led by 19 points at the break after leading in contested possessions (85-71), clearances (27-23), tackles (51-37) and inside 50s.

Patrick Dangerfield scored early in the third quarter before Stewart took full advantage of a 50-yard penalty to reduce the gap to nine.

Naughton made a huge, gutsy hit on a speculative snap by Ugle-Hagan to restore the three-goal lead and steady the Bulldogs.

From then on, the quarter was up and down until Cameron scored his first point, cutting the lead to 17 after three quarters.

But Naughton marked and scored from the top of the square early in the fourth quarter to put the Bulldogs on the road to victory before a long bomb shot from Ugle-Hagan – one of three goals in the final quarter – sealed the deal.

The Bulldogs next face Sydney at the SCG on Sunday, while Geelong travel to Hobart to play North Melbourne on Saturday.
