Canadian midfielder Tajon Buchanan was hospitalized after sustaining a lower leg injury during training for the Copa America quarter-finals.
Buchanan, 25, who also plays for Serie A club Inter Milan, played in all three of Canada’s group matches at the Copa America, reaching the knockout rounds in his tournament debut.
“He was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment,” the Canadian men’s national team said in a statement. “We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
According to sports network TSN, which spoke to Canadian defender Alistair Johnston, Buchanan’s injury occurred after a “clash” between players during a practice session. The practice was canceled after an ambulance arrived.
Johnston also told TSN that they heard about the injury as soon as it happened and described the mood on the team afterwards as “gloomy.”
Canada finished second behind Argentina in Group A at the Copa America with a 1-1-1 record and will face Venezuela on Friday in Arlington, Texas.
