Brian Blessed has “every intention” of flying into space.

The 87-year-old actor is proud to have completed cosmonaut training in Russia and is still waiting for the call to be launched from Earth.

He described his typical day to the Sunday Times magazine: “For lunch I have a cheese omelette and more yoghurt, then I go back to my gym to do some heavy lifting.”

“Then I go to my hut, where I may have invited a sporting or scientific champion for a conversation.

“I had Stephen Hawking there once and he said to me, ‘They want to send me into space, Brian. What do you think?’ And I said, ‘Well, Stephen, you can bloody well go!'”

“I have every intention of flying into space. I am the oldest person to have completed training as a cosmonaut in Moscow’s Star City. The call could come any day.”

Despite his advanced age, the Flash Gordon actor is “unusually fit” and stressed that he feels “ageless”.

He said: “I’m always training for something, be it another expedition to the magnetic North Pole or Mount Everest, and I bench press 300 pounds. I’m a black belt in judo and have always had tremendous strength.”

“I am incredibly fit and incredibly happy.

“The most unbearable thing I find is when people make a pact with old age. Don’t do that. I feel ageless.”

Blessed’s wife Hildegarde Neil died in 2023 and the screen legend – who has daughters Catherine from his first marriage and Rosalind with his late husband – sometimes feels “lonely”.

He said: “For breakfast I have yoghurt – I eat loads of it. I love Bulgarian yoghurt, although it takes some getting used to eating it on its own.”

“I feel quite lonely sometimes, but I have lots of friends I can talk to. I recently had a nice chat with Michael Palin at the Royal Geographical Society, as he also lost his wife last year.

“I still feel my wife’s presence and continue the adventurous life we once enjoyed together.”

However, the star of “I, Claudius” is happy with his own company.

He said: ‘I eat dinner around seven, something simple like soup, and then I am often quite antisocial in the evenings.

“I don’t give dinner parties, although I see Kenneth Branagh a lot. We have a father-son relationship – I am the son.

“But I love my own company.

“I’m a strange mix of contradictions, but I firmly believe that it’s important to be crazy. Allowing yourself to be a little crazy is very healthy.”
