World News 10-man Colombia edge Uruguay to make Copa America final Blog

Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the semi-finals of the Copa America despite playing with only ten men for 45 minutes.

Their win in Charlotte on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) set up a title playoff against defending champions Argentina thanks to a first-half header from Jefferson Lerma.

Uruguayan Darwin Nunez missed several chances in the first half and Colombia paid the price when Lerma beat the defence from a corner in the 39th minute and headed the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.

Colombia were reduced to ten men just before half-time when Daniel Munoz lost his nerve and was sent off. The right-back also received a second yellow card for elbowing Manuel Ugarte in the chest during a stoppage in play.

Uruguay had more possession in the second half and veteran striker Luis Suarez almost equalised with a shot that hit the post, but Colombia held on bravely to secure a magnificent victory that will see them face Argentina in the final on Sunday.

One day earlier, Uruguay will play against Canada in the match for third place.
