Despite all the dazzling and dizzying transformations it’s gone through, Fortnite’s seasonal system has been there since the game’s first year of launch. It was designed as a way to keep things fresh, to keep players coming back, and to somehow reset their progress each time. This gave them a reason to revisit and rebuild themselves with bells and whistles while trying out new mechanics, features, and new maps.

This is more commonly known as the Battle Pass system. What you do is purchase a season pass and this serves as a way to track your progress as you play, complete activities, and generally wander around. There are timed events to keep you motivated and entice you with limited chances of getting certain items, as well as a store that constantly rotates stock.

Of course, if you have access to the universal cheat code known as “a lot of money,” you can simply purchase whatever you want when it becomes available.

The seasons are not consistent in their timelines, and the latest structure is broken up into chapters, each of which contains several seasons within it. Each season tends to last about three months: we are still halfway through Chapter 5, Season 4: Absolute Doom.

However, these dates are not set in stone and may change based on player response, development plans, and technical issues. While unconfirmed, there are posts suggesting that the next season will see a return to OG Fortnite (the original maps, avatars, and mechanics) before Chapter 6 begins sometime later, with a theme/partnership TBD.
