Key findings

  • Teams meetings in Microsoft Mesh will soon be even more immersive.
  • Starting in October, Mac users can enjoy AI-powered noise cancellation for Teams calls.
  • Outlook for Windows gets better support for multiple accounts and better support for using Windows Narrator.

From Microsoft finally confirming the ultimate fate of the Windows Control Panel to Start menu ads for Windows 10, the last week has been quite eventful for Windows. However, the new features Microsoft announced for Microsoft 365 during the same period are not limited to Windows. In fact, they will affect Microsoft 365 users across all major platforms, including Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows.

We're back, giving you a weekly update on what new Microsoft 365 features are in the works and how they might impact your workflow. This week's roadmap update includes a wealth of features for Teams, OneDrive, Outlook, and Copilot.

4 Microsoft Teams: More immersive meetings, noise cancellation for Mac and more

Start or stop recording in Teams Rooms for Windows

If you have a Teams Rooms Pro subscription, you can start or stop recording in Teams Rooms for Windows without joining the meeting on a companion device, provided the meeting organizer is not using a designated resource account. This is coming in October of this year (Feature ID: 412072).

Noise reduction for Teams calls and meetings on macOS

The Teams Windows client already supports AI-powered noise cancellation technology to ensure that no unwanted background noise is transmitted along with your voice. Similar benefits will now be available to Mac users in October (Feature ID: 412359). If you use Teams on a Mac, you can apply noise cancellation to calls and meetings.

New collaborative project studio environment in Mesh

In our last Microsoft Roadmap Weekly, we informed you that Microsoft is working on adding whiteboards to Mesh events in Teams. In addition, the Redmond-based technology company is also working on a new “Project Studio environment” for immersive meetings and Mesh events (Feature ID: 412076). This will allow you to use whiteboards and other tools to collaborate on content in the virtual environment.

3 Microsoft Outlook: Better support for multiple accounts, new synchronization feature and more

Automatically read emails with Windows Narrator

The new Outlook for Windows is now generally available to everyone, but that's not stopping Microsoft from adding more handy features. For example, in November this year, the new Outlook will get support for Windows Narrator (Feature ID: 413429). Once the feature is available, Outlook users will be able to open emails and use the Windows Narrator screen recording tool to have those messages automatically read to them.

Multi-account support for add-ins and apps

The new Outlook for Windows already supports add-ins and apps, but only for your primary account. Starting in November, Microsoft will extend add-ins and app support to all your accounts in the new Outlook (Feature ID: 412936). In addition, the new Outlook will recognize when you switch between accounts and adjust apps and add-ins accordingly.

Copy participant list to clipboard, sort and filter participants

Not every upcoming Outlook feature will make you wait until November. For example, the ability to copy the attendee list from Outlook calendar events to a clipboard will be available this September (Feature ID: 412937). A month later, you'll also be able to sort meeting attendees alphabetically from the tracking list (Feature ID: 412938). Also available in October is the ability to filter meeting attendees by name (Feature ID: 412939). All of these changes are designed to help you find the right person faster.

Choose how many days you want emails to be synced to your device for offline use

It's not often that Microsoft announces new features up to five months before their release. Although this is rare, it happened last week when Microsoft announced a new sync feature for Outlook that will be released in January of next year (Feature ID: 412619).

Once the feature is available, you'll be able to choose how many days of emails and attachments you want to download to your device for offline access. A preview of this feature will be available in December, though it's not clear if everyone will be able to test it out in the preview phase.

More formatting options for Android and iOS

Microsoft has some exciting Outlook features in the pipeline for mobile users too. This November, Outlook for iOS and Android will introduce new formatting options that will allow you to highlight and emphasize something when writing an email on your phone (Feature ID: 411581). New formatting options include font size and color.

OneDrive in Outlook for Mac

If you use Outlook for Mac and store all your important files in OneDrive, Microsoft is bringing its cloud storage app into Outlook email on Mac (Feature ID: 412617). This means you don't have to leave the Outlook app on your Mac to access all your important files stored in OneDrive. Instead, look for the OneDrive app in Outlook. It will be available to everyone in October, with a preview starting next month.

2 OneDrive: Color-coded files in File Explorer

OneDrive is already integrated into Windows File Explorer, so you can view, manage, and sync files and folders directly from Explorer. Additionally, Microsoft wants to make sure users can more easily identify OneDrive files and folders. Starting next month, Windows File Explorer will display OneDrive files and folders in color (Feature ID: 410218).

1 Copilot for Microsoft 365: Language extension

Microsoft didn't announce any major new features for Copilot for Microsoft 365 last week. Instead, the focus is more on making the experience accessible to more people. That's why Copilot for Microsoft 365 will get support for 12 more languages next month, including Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Greek, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian (Latin), Slovak, Slovenia, and Vietnamese (Feature ID: 411778). Additionally, support for Dutch (Belgium), German (Switzerland), English (UK), Spanish (Mexico), and French (Canada) will be improved on Copilot in September.

Microsoft's next roadmap update may not be so exciting

As much as all Microsoft 365 users want Microsoft to announce a plethora of new features every week, the list of additions on the roadmap page might be shorter in the coming week. It's also worth keeping in mind that Microsoft might not stick to the original release schedule for every feature it adds to the roadmap.
