We love SBCs at XDA and love seeing people use them in different ways. The Raspberry Pi 5 has found its way into a variety of different projects (and is now even cheaper than ever), but it also makes a surprisingly good miniature PC. As proof, the company Soulscircuit makes a Pi-powered tablet that you can expand with modules.
Soulscircuit reveals the Pilet
Discovered by Tom's Hardwarethe Pilet is a really interesting take on the tablet. It runs a Raspberry Pi 5 under the hood and has enough juice in the battery to keep it running for about 7 hours. You can use the touchscreen to operate the operating system and the device is small enough to fit in a pocket and take with you.
The biggest advantage is that it's modular. Can't work without a keyboard? Connect one to the bottom, complete with a trackpad if you prefer moving the cursor around the screen. You can also add game controllers, cameras, or whatever you want – the modular design can keep up with your desires. And everything is built with open source code, so you can tweak things to your liking.
So, when is it coming out? Unfortunately, Soulscircuit is very tight-lipped about its plans to ship the device. The company says the Pilet is still in development and is currently in the prototype phase to iron out any issues before production. And the open-source code is not currently available for download. The developers say they will upload it once the product is ready to ship.
The good news is that Soulscircuit wants to keep this project as affordable as possible, aiming for production costs under $200, so if you're interested, be sure to check out the website and subscribe to the newsletter to hear more when the time comes.
