The central theses

  • Chrome warns uBlock Origin users about lack of support due to Manifest V3 migration.
  • The developers of uBlock Origin are facing challenges in the transition to Manifest V3.
  • Users have to choose between the Lite version of uBlock Origin or switching to another browser for compatibility reasons.

Google recently improved its Chrome security tools to protect users from malware. These improvements won't take away any feature you enjoy using in the browser. In the coming months, Google will also improve the overall security of extensions, but this benefit will come at the expense of many popular web browser extensions leaving the Chrome Web Store, such as uBlock Origin.

The crux of the problem is that Google is in the process of retiring Manifest V2 and introducing the latest Manifest V3. From security improvements to improved performance, migrating to Manifest V3 offers developers some tangible benefits. However, for the developers of uBlock Origin, the migration is not so simple.

uBlock Origin is one of the most popular ad blocking extensions, but it is not Manifest V3 compatible and may never be. The company highlights the challenges of switching to Manifest V3 and asks users to switch to uBlock Origin Lite or another alternative they prefer if they don't want to switch to another browser. uBlock Origin Lite is Manifest V3 compatible but lacks the advanced customization capabilities of uBlock Origin.

This is the only reason why Google shows uBlock Origin users the warning message that the extension may soon be unsupported (via Android Authority). The warning banner is displayed on the uBlock Origin Web Store website for Google Chrome Canary, Beta and Dev.

This is not the end for uBlock Origin

Development of uBlock Origin continues because not everyone is following Google's approach. Firefox, for example, has no plans to abandon Manifest V2, so users should have no problems using the browser in the next few days. However, Chrome users may soon have to decide whether to abandon Google Chrome or use uBlock Origin Lite.
