Key findings
- Get creative with your Raspberry Pi by reviving old tech like PS1 consoles for a nostalgic gaming experience.
- Join the Raspberry Pi subreddit to see innovative projects, like a PS1 revival by MrNiceThings with a working CD drive.
- Use SBCs like Raspberry Pi to bridge the gap between authenticity and simplicity and bring vintage game consoles back to life.
If you're a regular XDA reader, you'll know we love it when people combine SBCs with retro gaming. So far, we've mostly reviewed people using the Raspberry Pi for emulation, like when our writer Ayush Pande turned an SBC into an emulation monster.
However, there has also been a lot of work done on reviving old tech using Raspberry Pis. Because of their size, they fit easily into old console cases. You just need to figure out how to wire everything up so that buttons, controller ports, and other features still work. And if you want an example, someone on Reddit showed their progress on reviving a PS1 using a Pi.

Raspberry Pi 5 review: The holy grail of DIY projects just got better (and rarer)
The Raspberry Pi 5 is one of the most powerful consumer SBCs available. Unfortunately, due to limited quantities, it will be difficult to find one.
An inventive Redditor revives an old PlayStation 1 with a Raspberry Pi
You can check out the project for yourself on the unofficial Raspberry Pi subreddit. People there usually show off their cool projects, from finished designs to works in progress. Recently, someone named MrNiceThings took the time to show off what they're bringing back to life using a PS1.
MrNiceThings explained that his project aims to “[the] least visible modification possible,” which includes a working CD reader and controller ports. It's still a work in progress, as evidenced by the fact that the optical drive sits outside the PS1 – however, MrNiceThings states that it will fit snugly inside once he has a 3D printed template for it.
If you love the idea of reviving old tech but the thought of buying real hardware sends shivers down your spine, an SBC can be a fantastic middle ground between authenticity and ease of acquisition. For example, someone brought a broken Game Gear back to life with a Pi, and although the internals were gutted, a lot of care was taken to make it feel like the real thing. And if you can't settle for anything less than real hardware, check out how someone folded a PS1 motherboard into a portable gaming case.
