- Follow Zeus' command and prevent Hades from taking over
- The game world feels a bit bland
- Unlock awesome spells to summon fiery tornadoes or miniguns
Between the family feuds, rampant infidelity, and outright malice of the Greek myths, we continue to be fascinated by its many monsters, heroes, and deities thousands of years after its fall. Therefore, it is not surprising that several games focus on Greek mythology.
The Wizard is a new mobile adventure RPG that puts you in the lead role who, at Zeus' command, must stop Hades (no, not that one) from conquering both Olympus and the mortal world. To stop him you will have to master powerful spells and defeat hordes of monstrous creatures.
No hand holding in The Wizard
While the gameplay is simple, the lack of a tutorial may leave you stumped at first. Essentially, you progress along a linear path, encountering monstrous enemies along the way. It doesn't take long to go from battling one enemy to an entire army of enemies, as they will continue to spawn throughout each fight. Typically, a hellfire barrier prevents you from leaving an arena until you've defeated the majority of your enemies.
To survive, you will have to continuously move around the arena, dodging enemy attacks and hitting your enemies with spells. If an enemy touches you, you'll start to lose health, and with so many enemies swarming together, one small mistake can quickly cost you your life. Your current health is represented by a number at the top of the screen. Unlike most RPGs, The Wizard has no health potions. However, you will quickly regain health after moving away from enemies for a few seconds.
The magician: the tools of the trade
Your adorable little wizard comes with four types of spells: basic, ray, conjuration, and legendary. Hold down the beam spell button to fire a continuous stream of magic at enemies until the spell gauge runs out. Summon offers a powerful attack that damages multiple monsters at once, while Legendary spells deal excessive damage to a wide range of enemies.
As you'd expect, summoning and legendary spells have much longer cooldown periods than basic and range spells, so be careful how you use them. Of course, you can also complete cooldown-reducing challenges by visiting the Challenges menu. By completing them all, you will remove the cooldown entirely.
Improve your spells
Earning enough experience will allow you to unlock higher level spells. For example, you'll start with Darkness Ball equipped as your basic spell, but you can unlock new basic spells like Poison Ball and Dark Arrow throughout the game.
There are some really cool legendary spells to unlock, like Inferno, which summons fire tornadoes, or Minigun Parade, which summons a minigun to mow down monsters. Upgrading your equipped spells is definitely one of the highlights of the game. You'll have fun trying out some pretty creative new spells while battling terrifying beasts.
Battles against wizard bosses
As you progress through the game, you will encounter different bosses that you will have to eliminate. Even though the boss battles rely mostly on the same tactics as typical enemy battles, they still serve as a nice change of pace, which is especially nice considering how redundant things sometimes feel.
The Wizard's world feels a bit flat and has little variation. Some leaves, crates or other decorations would be a great help to beautify it. During combat you will be too busy to notice the dull environment around you. Rather, it's the in-between arenas where the repetitiveness of the surroundings really stands out.
Is it worth it?
The Wizard is a fun little RPG that manages to offer a real challenge despite its simplicity. However, considering how difficult it can be to take down growing hordes of enemies while maintaining a safe distance, this title is certainly not for everyone.
If you prefer your RPGs to offer complex gameplay mechanics and rich, engaging stories, then you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you like to test your mettle against hordes of evil enemies, then the Wizard may cast his spell on you.
