The second-generation Backbone One controller will support the upcoming iPhone 16

  • The Backbone One controller will be compatible with the upcoming iPhone 16
  • As shown at the recent Apple event, you will be able to take advantage of all the controller features on iPhone 16
  • It's an important step in Apple's ongoing attempts to reshape its gaming identity

The Backbone One gaming controller will be compatible with the upcoming iPhone 16 as part of its second generation, it has been announced. The Apple Event is an annual showcase that gives Apple fans and tech geeks a sneak peek at what's to come in the coming months.

While this is obviously a great marketing move for Backbone, it’s worth noting that it’s just part of Apple’s overall move to push gaming as a bigger part of its identity. The release of Resident Evil 7 and 8 (or Village) and Assassin’s Creed Mirage on iPhone was a major advertising point despite lackluster sales.

You can find out what we thought of the Backbone One when it was first released, including our big complaint. But for those who want to use their iPhone to play some of these releases, the Backbone might just become their go-to choice thanks to this inclusion.

I am

Only on iPhone

I mentioned in my little opinion piece that the controls for Resident Evil 7 have made it a bit of a laughing stock when it comes to the iPhone port. And I think that’s one of the reasons Apple is so keen to push the controller option in their marketing. They’re basically saying, “Here, if you’re serious about gaming, why don’t you give this a try?”

At the same time, I wonder when Apple will decide to take the plunge and produce its own.

However, if you can’t afford the luxury of a Backbone controller or simply want to play one of the many games already available, why not check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far)?
