Sword of Convallaria, the new JRPG from XD Entertainment (the folks behind Torchlight: Infinite), has already reached over five million downloads since its launch a week ago. To celebrate, the game will be having a special login event running from August 9th to August 18th (EDT) where you can acquire ten of the Secret Fates resources.
While Sword of Convallaria received a decent review from us, we should always temper it with the recognition that the JRPG genre can be difficult to understand. While separating it from Western RPGs may be controversial, it is undeniable that the two have very different genre conventions and mechanics.
So, as we stress in our review, if you’re looking for a solid JRPG adaptation for mobile, then Sword of Convallaria with its retro graphics, grid-based combat, and familiar classes will definitely be what you’re looking for. Just don’t expect that to change your mind if you’re adamantly against JRPGs.
Breaking limit
Whatever your stance on JRPGs, it’s interesting to see a game like Convallaria prove so popular. You may remember when we discussed Arknights: Endfield the other day, where we speculated that fully 3D open-world RPGs would be the “big” games of the future. But Sword of Convallaria seems to prove that there’s still room for smaller-scale, more aesthetically pleasing RPGs, too.
