  • Steve Jackson's FIST Returns as Part of the Sound Realms Catalog
  • Use your touchscreen to dial numbers and listen to narration of your adventure through Castle Mammon
  • Find treasures, fight monsters, and avoid a gruesome end in this fully voiced audio CYOA

Audio RPG platform Sound Realms is ready to take on one of the most important, yet often forgotten, mobile games of all time with the launch of Steve Jackson’s FIST tomorrow, September 7. This choose-your-own adventure follows in the footsteps of the Fighting Fantasy game series, letting you venture into the mysterious and deadly Castle Mammon.

Steve Jackson, not to be confused with the other Steve Jackson (also of board game fame) co-founded Games Workshop and also helped produce FIST (Fantasy Interactive Scenarios by Telephone) way back in 1988 in collaboration with telephone company Computerdial.

How does it work (or did it work)? Simple, you listen to audio narration and sound effects, which guide you through Castle Mammon to defeat the demon prince Kaddis Ra. You are then given choices, much like a choose-your-own-adventure book, that could lead to incredible treasure or a gruesome death.

Once upon a time, this could be done by typing a number into your phone's keypad (or even the rotating dial), but now you can enjoy FIST using your touchscreen – and without the sky-high phone bill!

Oddly enough, I own more than a few old copies of White Dwarf (Games Workshop’s tabletop roleplaying magazine) before it became a Warhammer-focused magazine. One of the perennial ads I would see when leafing through these hallowed tomes was for FIST, and I was always surprised to find how popular telephone roleplaying was back then.

It's really amazing how innovative it was, there was even a line called The Black Claw Tavern where you could chat with other players! No word yet on whether it will return, or if the highest-scoring players in FIST will receive a gold coin for their efforts.
