Have you picked up one of Nintendo's new alarm clocks yet? The Alarmy is pretty cool in itself, but of course where there's an interesting device there's someone not far behind who wants to break it down and make it do their bidding. If you're looking to tweak your own Alarmy, someone is working on freeing it from its hard-coded shell, starting with a cute cat picture.

This cool achievement was showcased on Gary's hacking stuff. With the help of another hardware hacker on X named Spinda, Gary managed to defeat Alarmo's system in order to run his own code on it. On his first attempt, he impressively got into the Alarmo system by finding a way to load firmware binaries over USB without having to open the device.
If you want to try this code, it's not at the point where you can do much with it yet. However, you can still try it out by visiting the GitHub project with all the code. Now, if you successfully get the code to work on your Alarmo, you will be rewarded with a picture of a cute cat and not much else.
Fortunately, Gary believes that getting the project to the point where you can run arbitrary code from the USB port without having to open the Alarmo will encourage others to develop programs that run on the Alarm Clock. Trust us; As soon as someone gets Doom running on this thing, we'll report back as soon as possible.
