Apple iPhone 14 Pro
Still strong
The Apple iPhone 14 Pro is one of the most advanced iPhones of the last generation, offering you a 120Hz refresh rate display and a triple camera. The phone offers a variety of photo and video options thanks to Apple ProRAW and ProRes support. Compared to the iPhone 15, it is still a size bigger.

Apple released its iPhone 15 lineup last year, and despite the familiar look, the new devices offer some nice improvements under the hood. While the Pro models come with a new chipset, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus offer a mix of new features (including the same A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Pro) and some compromises.
Dynamic Island and the USB Type-C port are the main changes to the regular iPhone 15 models that could help them make our best phones list this year. However, compared to the older iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 lacks a few things, such as a dedicated telephoto camera and a higher refresh rate. This begs the question: should you consider the new iPhone 15 or stick with the older iPhone 14 Pro?
As of August 2024, that question is more complicated. While the iPhone 14 Pro is still great if you have one, it's nearly impossible to find one in new, unlocked condition. Plus, the iPhone 16 series will almost certainly be announced at an Apple event next month, so it might be worth waiting for that. And neither of these phones will support Apple Intelligence when they launch. There are good reasons to hold off on buying the iPhone 15 or iPhone 14 Pro right now, but if you're deciding between the two, we've got a full breakdown here.
Price, availability and specifications
The iPhone 15 was announced on September 12, 2023, and launched on September 22. It comes in three storage variants in blue, pink, yellow, green, and black. Prices are $799 for the 128GB model, $899 for the 256GB model, and $1,099 for the 512GB model. There are also plenty of great iPhone 15 cases available.
The iPhone 14 Pro is no longer available on Apple's official website (only the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are), and it's only available new through carriers. Official retail prices for the iPhone 14 Pro start at $899 for the base model with 128GB or $999 for 256GB of storage (larger storage options are no longer available). Original color options include Space Black, Deep Purple, Silver, and Gold, though most are no longer available in new condition. However, refurbished units are available in other colors on Amazon and Best Buy.

Apple's iPhone 15 may look like last year's iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 before that, but it's still an upgrade that impresses.

iPhone 14 Pro review: More of the same with just enough variety
The iPhone 14 Pro feels pretty familiar, but has just enough design changes to stand on its own.
Design and display
Siblings who could almost be mistaken for twins
Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 Pro have nearly identical dimensions. The iPhone 15 is 0.1mm thinner, but from the front, the phones are indistinguishable. However, when you hold them in your hand, you'll notice that the iPhone 14 Pro is a bit heavier (7.27 ounces versus 6.02 ounces) due to the build materials and the 14 Pro's additional camera. The iPhone 15 has an aluminum frame with a contoured edge design compared to the iPhone 14 Pro's stainless steel frame. Flip it over, and that's when you notice the iPhone 14 Pro's triple camera compared to the iPhone 15's dual camera module. Both phones also have an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.
As for the displays, both phones have a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with a resolution of 2556 x 1179, both have Dynamic Island, and both screens have a peak outdoor brightness of 2,000 nits. However, two big differences give the iPhone 14 Pro's display an immediate advantage: a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and an always-on display. A higher refresh rate means transitions are noticeably smoother on the iPhone 14 Pro than on the iPhone 15, which has a 60Hz refresh rate. An adaptive refresh rate also ensures optimal battery usage.
Performance and battery
The A16 Bionic is no slacker
Both phones come with the A16 Bionic chip, which includes a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core neural engines. Given the similar hardware, you can expect almost identical performance from both phones in everyday use. While the iPhone 15 has a USB Type-C port, data transfer speeds are limited to USB 2.0 speeds, similar to the speeds of the iPhone 14 Pro's Lightning port.

Apple introduces the new A16 Bionic, its most powerful mobile chip for the latest iPhones
Apple has introduced the new A16 Bionic, its most powerful mobile chip for the latest iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
While both phones come with 6GB of RAM, the iPhone 14 Pro can have up to 1TB of storage. According to Apple's website, battery life for video playback and streaming is better on the iPhone 14 Pro than the iPhone 15. The iPhone 15 outperformed its predecessor in our real-world tests, lasting a full day in most conditions.
The newly announced Apple Intelligence suite of AI features requires an A17 Pro chip or newer, meaning neither the iPhone 15 nor the iPhone 14 Pro support it.
Cameras
The Pro series cameras continue to impress
The camera department is where the Pro variants of the iPhone differ from the regular ones. This is also true when you compare iPhones by generation. The iPhone 14 Pro has a triple camera setup with a 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera, while the iPhone 15 has only a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The iPhone 15's photos are brighter by default, thanks to a wider aperture of f/1.6 on the main camera as opposed to the f/1.7 on the iPhone 14 Pro's main camera. The front cameras on both phones are identical and feature 12MP TrueDepth cameras.

How to use Pro Camera Mode on your iPhone
Current iPhone models have significantly improved photo quality. Here's how to use the Pro camera mode on your Apple iPhone.
For those who love taking portrait photos but forget to enable Portrait Mode on the iPhone 14 series and older, the iPhone 15 has a solution. It can now capture all the depth information in a photo, allowing you to turn a regular photo into a shallow depth of field photo after the fact. You can even change the focus from one subject to another. Yes, this feature has been around on Android phones for a while, but now it's available on the iPhone too.
The big advantage of the iPhone 14 Pro is ProRAW and Macro mode for stills and ProRes for video recording (on the front and rear cameras). These two options, coupled with more advanced image stabilization, give the iPhone 14 Pro an edge, especially if you're obsessed with posting photos and videos to social media. Plus, thanks to an extra lens, you get a lot more flexibility in terms of focal length range than the iPhone 15.
iPhone 15 vs. iPhone 14 Pro: Which phone is better?
The iPhone 15 with Dynamic Island, dedicated Portrait mode, and USB Type-C port paved the way for future non-Pro iPhones. Compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 doesn't perform as well in a few areas. It's not a bad phone, but at the same time, nothing is compelling enough to recommend it over the iPhone 14 Pro. If you're already using the iPhone 14 Pro, there's no reason to upgrade to the iPhone 15. However, since the iPhone 14 Pro is now out of stock everywhere and is clearly going out of style on the way, the iPhone 15 is the one for you – unless you opt for an iPhone 15 Pro or wait for the iPhone 16.

iPhone15
The only major upgrades on the iPhone 15 are the presence of a Dynamic Island and a USB Type-C port. But those aren't compelling reasons to upgrade when the other choice is the iPhone 14 Pro.
That's a tough call, as both phones are remarkably similar. All things being equal, I'd still say the iPhone 14 Pro comes out on top as it offers more for your money, but that's assuming you can still find a new model on sale. That phone is almost impossible to find new this late in 2024, so you may only be left with the iPhone 15 as an option.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro
Even though the iPhone 14 Pro is now a generation older, it still offers enough power and better value for money than the newly introduced iPhone 15. The triple cameras, 120 Hz ProMotion display and better battery life are good reasons to choose the iPhone 14 Pro over the iPhone 15.
