Savvy Games Group and Niantic Sign Agreement to Support Middle East and North Africa Expansion

  • Niantic and Savvy Games Group have signed a new memorandum of understanding
  • This indicates that Savvy will support them in their attempts to expand into the MENA market.
  • Simply put, it could lay the foundation for a proper agreement in the future.

Savvy Games Group and Pokémon Go developer Niantic have signed a new memorandum of understanding. The document is intended to support Niantic as it seeks to expand into the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region; primarily Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.

Now, first of all, what is an MoU? Well, we have to tread carefully so we don't get yelled at, but in essence, it's usually a very basic, semi-formal agreement. It basically says, “We're happy to move forward with this if you are.” Right now, that means the door is open for more or less collaboration. In business terms, it's more of a handshake than anything else, at least initially.

At this point, the two have been discussing things like community initiatives, support for opening new offices, and recruiting local employees, and the like. But what’s notable is that Niantic, which has seemed on the defensive lately, is now moving full steam ahead to once again bring Pokémon Go further and further around the world. Or is it?

I am

More than this

Of course, Niantic has the license for Pokémon, of course. But that means there’s potential for them to push their IP like Peridot further, or even potentially develop their own game further down the line. As vague as this MoU is, it presents a lot of exciting possibilities for what we might expect in the near future, especially as Saudi Arabia continues to throw a lot of money into the gaming industry with events like the eSports World Cup.

But does this mean everything will go as planned? Well, we'll have to see how this all plays out.
