Raspberry Pi has finally released a new touch display after almost 10 years

Key insights

  • The Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is a 7-inch touchscreen for Pi projects with a resolution of 720 x 1280 and five-finger touch support.
  • The display does not require an external power supply; It runs off the Pi board, making it perfect for outdoor projects.
  • It is compatible with all Raspberry Pi models except the Zero series and the boards can be easily connected for seamless functionality.

Hey, remember when the Raspberry Pi Touch Display was announced? If so, you might be surprised to know that it first came out in 2015, almost ten years ago. If you've been longing for an official screen but don't want to use the older model, don't worry. The Raspberry Pi company has now lifted the curtain on the Touch Display 2 and it already looks like a winner.

As announced on the Raspberry Pi blog, the Touch Display 2 seems to be a good upgrade from its older brother. Here are the company's specifications:

  • 7″ display diagonal
  • 88 mm × 155 mm active area
  • 720 (RGB) × 1280 pixels
  • True capacitive multi-touch panel that supports five-finger touch
  • Fully supported by Raspberry Pi OS
  • Powered by the host Raspberry Pi

The last point is the most interesting. A display that doesn't require an external power supply and can be powered from the Pi's circuit board is certainly suitable for a variety of projects where it's more difficult to power devices. Think about Pi projects that need to be outside to work – you don't really want to run extra cables just to keep the screen on.

The company states that any Raspberry Pi above the 1B can run it, with the exception of the Zero series as it does not have a DSI port. Simply screw the board onto the back of the screen, wire it up and it should work natively with the Raspberry Pi OS. Plus points are the five-finger touch function, the on-screen keyboard and the integrated display driver board.

If you still want to grab the first touch display, Raspberry Pi has confirmed that it will not be discontinued; However, the first model is not preferred over the second. The company says it won't produce the Touch Display 2 until 2030 at the earliest, so you'll have plenty of time to secure one.

The Touch Display 2 costs $60 and you can read all about it in the announcement blog post.
