As announced in an email, ExpressVPN is now ready to run on devices running Windows on Arm. This is great news, as we named ExpressVPN the fastest VPN of 2024 and have a lot of good things to say about it. ExpressVPN itself claims to be “one of the first top-tier VPN providers to release an ARM-compatible application,” and it's nice to see it's made the jump.
Interestingly, while other apps have developed an Arm-compatible version of the app, ExpressVPN has chosen to port the app. Instead, ExpressVPN has chosen to use Microsoft's Prism emulator. According to Himmat Bains, Head of Product at ExpressVPN, Prism's emulation performance is so good that there is no need to develop a native app:
Although we originally planned to build a native ARM application, we were able to change our approach in Windows 11 24H2 thanks to the advanced features of Microsoft's latest Prism emulator. The emulator's performance has reached a level that is now directly comparable to a native version – it just made sense for us to use it. We are excited to be at the forefront of VPN technology on ARM-based machines with this release, together with Microsoft and Qualcomm, and we look forward to further innovations that this collaboration will bring.
