Key insights

  • Teams now allows renaming the general channel and recommending channels to new members for clarity.
  • The new Shared tab replaces the Files tab in group chats. Images are displayed horizontally to save space.
  • Copilot, Mesh, Webinars and Teams Rooms received new functions for improved collaboration.

Teams is Microsoft's leading online communication and collaboration tool, regularly adding new features. Towards the end of each month, the Redmond tech giant summarizes all the features it has added to the software in the last four weeks. Now the company has detailed improvements it made to Teams in September 2024.

What new features have chat and collaboration received?

A very useful change made to Teams in the previous month is the ability to rename the Generally Channel when forming a new team to improve clarity and meaningfulness. When a new user joins a team, owners also have the opportunity to recommend specific channels to them.

When it comes to group chats or 1:1 conversations, users can take advantage of this Divided Tab – which replaces the files Tab –; It contains a consolidated view of all shared URLs and files. Additionally, when you attach images in chat, they appear horizontally to take up less space in the compose box. You can also navigate between the attached images, copy them, and add alternative text. Once sent, Teams automatically adjusts their size and aspect ratio for optimal viewing.

What about people who use Copilot, Mesh, Webinars and Town Halls?

Tenants with Copilot licenses were able to use many new features in September 2024. On desktop and mobile devices, Copilot can now leverage both the meeting transcription and associated chat to paint a complete picture of what was discussed during a conversation. Likewise, those with a Teams Premium or Copilot for Microsoft 365 license can receive meeting summary and insights directly in Outlook. However, if IT administrators feel that Copilot is not providing enough value to their users, they can also use granular controls to disable it for specific users under certain conditions.

Meanwhile, on the mesh side of the fence, customers can use a new workshop environment for smaller team collaboration activities. Additionally, organizers can allow moderators to moderate question-and-answer sessions, with organizers also having the ability to sort questions by audience votes and filter them based on keywords to facilitate a more engaging discussion. This is now available to even more customers as webinars have reached GCC high.

Impressive! What about Teams Rooms and other hardware?

Teams Rooms on Windows received many new features with version 5.2, and more are coming this month. Currently, customers can leverage ultrasonic proximity join, proximity join roster grouping, UI customization options such as text and dynamic video tile resizing, and native console controls for OEM features. However, that's not all. Users can also take advantage of Cloud IntelliFrame preview display, breakout rooms, automated work locations on bookable desks, and custom background images in Teams panels.

Additionally, the following devices are now Teams certified:

  • ViewSonic® TeamJoin™ TRS10
  • Meeting with Owl 3
  • Yealink MeetingBar A40
  • VC520 Pro3
  • Poly Studio E60
  • Lenovo Wireless VoIP Headset

If you think that these are all the new features that Microsoft added to Teams in September 2024, you are wrong. There are also many other improvements related to Teams' phone, platform and frontline worker solutions. You can read more about this in Microsoft's dedicated blog post here.
