- Maple Tale is a newly released idle role-playing game
- It boasts fantastic pixel art, but issues with the game and its marketing have ruined it
- Maple Tale's ads have been accused of copying unauthorized works by several artists
Arriving as part of the seemingly ever-ongoing pixel RPG craze, Maple Tale is the latest game to throw its hat into the ring. Coming from developer LUCKYYX Games, it appears to be a fairly standard idle RPG with some delicious looking pixel art on the surface, and with over 100,000 downloads on Google Play alone, you'd expect it to have at least a few fans.
However, Maple Tale already sits at a measly 2.1 stars on Google Play, with nearly all reviewers reporting problems actually playing the game in the first place. Of course, teething problems aren’t necessarily a big deal, and even the greatest games can have a rocky launch.
More pertinent are Maple Tale's image problems, literally. Both the media and artists on Twitter have criticized the game for including a number of unauthorized works in their advertising. And while it's unclear whether this is actually used in the game, it certainly doesn't look the best.
Is there no such thing as bad publicity? It must be admitted that the name Maple Tale itself is strikingly similar to Maple Story, so there were some warning signs that the developers might have copied from other games. It's also a shame, because judging by the number of downloads and the corresponding reviews, the actual content of the game itself seemed to entice many players. Unfortunately, no matter what the actual content of Maple Tale is, it may have lost all chance of credibility with these scandals.
