Building positive habits is key to achieving our professional, career, personal, and relationship goals. But let's face it. Creating an ideal habit tracker can be a chore in itself. While there are dozens of digital habit trackers out there, adding another tool to your ever-growing list of apps may not be productive at all. That's where Notion comes in. Besides jotting down notes, managing projects, creating journal entries, and keeping a book list, you can also use Notion to track your habits.
However, the whole process is not as simple as it seems. It requires a database of specific formulas for an ideal habit tracker page in Notion. To make your job easier, I have created a comprehensive habit tracker in Notion that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, so you can save yourself the grunt work and focus on developing those transformative habits.
If you want to create a truly unique habit tracker for yourself, you can follow the step-by-step instructions in the post below. If you're short on time, you can also use the template I've linked at the bottom of this page and simply copy it into your Notion account.
Start a Notion page as a habit tracker
As with any Notion page, you can start by creating a page from scratch and adding a favicon, banner, and any quote that inspires you.
- Open your personal Notion workspace and click + next to Private to add a new page.
- Give it a meaningful name, assign it an icon and add a banner at the top.
- You can upload an image from your computer or find a suitable one on Unsplash.
- Let's also add a motivational quote. Type /Quote and add a quote that motivates you daily.
- Click on the six-dot menu, expand Offer size and select Large to highlight it.
Now that the basics are in place, it's time to add widgets. Since Notion doesn't support them natively, you'll need to import them from third-party marketplaces. In the example below, we'll use some widgets from Widgetbox.
- Navigate to the widget box and take a look at the list of widgets. Select Life course Diagram. Click Create.
- Customize the content of your life progress bar. You can customize the date of birth, set the life expectancy, tweak the background, font, life bar and year bar color. Copy the URL.
- Go to your Notion page. Enter /embed and paste the link you copied above.
- Your widget will appear and is ready to use. You can also add a clock, weather or other relevant widgets that can help you achieve your goals.
Design a weekly habit tracker
I'm now going to create a weekly habit tracker. To do this, we'll create an advanced database with relevant columns and some progress bars.
- Create a Habit tracker Heading. Type /Table and insert Table view.
- Enter the first column as follows: Tasks.
- Select another column and click Edit property.
- Change the type to Checkbox.
- Rename the column to Mon (Monday). Similarly, create different columns for the other days of the week.
- Now you need to insert another column called formula.
- Go to Edit property and expand the formula Tab.
- Enter the formula as shown below.
(((((toNumber(Mon) + toNumber(Tue)) + toNumber(Wed)) + toNumber(Thu)) + toNumber(Fri)) + toNumber(Sat)) + toNumber(Sun)
You can display it as a bar, insert a number if needed, change the bar color, divide it by 7 (seven days per week), and turn the number on or off. Likewise, you can add a ring bar using the same formula as above.
This is what your habit tracker should look like. You can calculate the number and percentage for each habit in the table below. From now on, when you click the checkbox, the database should automatically update the progress and the ring bar to visualize your progress.
Set weekly goals and priorities
Your weekly habit tracker is now set up. You can add upcoming tasks and priorities so you can track everything like a pro. They are easy to add. You can add Weekly tasks And Priorities Headings and arrange them in the sidebar.
- Create a Weekly tasks Header and give it a background color.
- Mark the days of the week and make a toggle list out of them.
- Add a to-do list under each day of the week.
- Now add another header with the name Priorities and enter your most important tasks for the week.
For your weekly tasks you can enter: @remember next to each task and set a reminder for a specific time of day to actively support you in achieving your goals.
Add a weekly calendar
Since Notion now supports your existing Gmail calendars, you can insert a weekly view to review your upcoming tasks.
- type /Calendar and insert a calendar block.
- Now change the calendar view to WeekTo do this, click on the three-dot menu, expand layoutand select View calendar as.
- Click Week.
- You can + to add an event or Open in calendar to review your existing Gmail events.
Pro tip: Add reflection notes and decorative elements
Your ultimate productive habit tracker is almost ready to use in Notion. Let's finish with some decorative elements and reflection notes.
- Add a header with the name Self-reflection.
- Insert a list and dividers to keep your notes separate.
- You can also add some images to enhance the aesthetics of the Notion page. See the screenshot below for reference.
There are other ways to enhance your Notion pages too. From custom fonts to callout blocks, there are plenty of options to choose from. Check out our dedicated guide to creating beautiful Notion pages in minutes.
