How to share an AirTag with others on iOS and iPadOS 18

An Apple AirTag is arguably the best Find My tracker for iPhone users as it offers many features and a long range. One of the handy features of iPadOS and iOS 18 is the ability to share an AirTag with another user who also has a vested interest in keeping an eye on it. This allows up to six people to track the same AirTag from their iDevices at the same time. To share an AirTag on your iPhone or iPad, follow the simple steps listed below.

How to share an AirTag with someone else on iPhone or iPad

Sharing an AirTag on iOS or iPadOS is easy

1. Start the Find my App on your iDevice.

2. Navigate to the Article and tap the AirTag that you want to share.

3. Tap the Add person Button.

4. Tap the Continue Button.

5. Enter the name of a contact and click Send Once selected, click the button. Now you and the new user can both view the AirTag's location, provided their device is running at least iOS 17 (or later).

How to stop sharing an AirTag

If you change your mind, you can stop sharing an AirTag at any time

To revoke someone’s access:

1. Tap the person’s name in the Share this AirTag Section.

2. Click on the Remove Button.

3. Confirm with the Stop sharing Button.

4. The other user will no longer be able to see the AirTag's location in the Find My app. If that particular AirTag is still with them, they will receive a notification saying AirTag moves with youwhich could lead someone to know that they are being followed.

Only the original owner who paired the AirTag with their Apple ID can remove sharing permissions. People you grant access to cannot revoke the permissions themselves.

Why sharing AirTags can be important

As our steps show, it's extremely easy to share an AirTag with someone on iOS or iPadOS. It can be ideal for those who have the same concerns about an item. You might want to leave an AirTag on your pet's collar or on a shared item like a TV remote or keychain. Before iOS and iPadOS 17, families sharing an AirTag only received notifications when the AirTag was separated from its owner. There was no real way to see the AirTag's location without asking the owner to manually check.

By sharing an AirTag, people living in the same household can finally silence unwanted tracking notifications caused by a tagged item that multiple members frequently carry around. Note that you can only share your AirTag with up to five other users at a time, not with a larger group.
