The ROG Ally is one of the best alternatives to the Steam Deck, but like any other Windows PC, it's prone to weird issues. Most of these issues can be resolved with a quick reboot or some simple troubleshooting. However, if the problem persists, you may need to do a factory reset and start everything over. Note that a full reset will erase all your data, which is why a factory reset is also a good idea if you're selling the ROG Ally and want to upgrade to another PC gaming handheld.
Reset ROG Ally to factory settings using BIOS
You can easily reset ROG Ally to factory settings via BIOS. Before doing so, make sure the following requirements are met.
- Connect your Asus ROG Ally to a 65W charger to prevent it from turning off during the reset process.
- Use the MyAsus app to update the BIOS and make sure you have the latest version.
- Connect ROG Ally to a high-speed Wi-Fi network to download a fresh copy of Windows 11.
When you're ready, follow the steps below to perform a factory reset. There are a few ways to access the BIOS. One way is to turn off the Ally completely and press the power button. At the same time, press and hold the volume down button until the BIOS screen appears. Alternatively, you can access the BIOS through Windows Settings.
- Open windows Settings and select system.
- Choose recreation and find Advanced Start under Recovery options.
- Choose Restart now.
- Go to Troubleshooting > Advanced options > UEFI firmware settings.
- This opens the BIOS Utility Menu. Access the advanced menu by Y.
- Slide to Progressive Choose Asus Cloud Recovery and press A.
- You'll be prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network, after which your ROG Ally will download a fresh copy of Windows 11.
Once the download process is complete, the Windows 11 setup screen should appear. Sign in with your Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions. You can now tweak your ROG Ally and start downloading games from your favorite launcher.
Reset ROG Ally via Windows Settings
If the above steps don't work for you, or you want to try to keep some of your data, use the Reset menu in Windows Settings to reset ROG Ally to factory settings. Just follow the steps listed below.
- Start Windows Settings and go to system > recreation Menu.
- Choose Reset PC.
- With this method you can either Keep my files or Remove allThe latter resets the Ally to its complete factory settings. Keep my files This option will keep all files and folders stored in your user folder, but any software or apps you have installed will still be uninstalled.
- Your ROG Ally may need to restart several times to complete the reset process.
Resetting the ROG Ally to factory settings may take about 30 minutes to an hour, so be patient and keep your handheld connected to a power source.
Set up your ROG Ally from scratch
If you are unable to resolve a particular issue on your ROG Ally, you can perform a factory reset as a last resort.
