You may already know this, but batteries wear out over time. As you use them and recharge them, batteries lose their original designed capacity. You may think that keeping your laptop fully charged is a good thing – but you'd be wrong.
While charging and discharging a battery is the fastest way to wear it out, constantly charging a battery at 100% will also cause faster wear. Fortunately, PC manufacturers have developed a feature that lets you limit your laptop's battery charge to 80% (sometimes even less), so if you use your laptop plugged in most of the time, you can extend its lifespan by keeping it under that threshold. Unfortunately, this feature isn't included in Windows 11 itself yet, but most laptops offer a version of it.
How to limit battery charge on HP laptops
HP has two methods to limit the battery charge of its laptops: Adaptive battery optimizer And Battery care function. Both are found in the BIOS and are mutually exclusive. Adaptive Battery Optimizer automatically adjusts the battery's charging behavior based on your usage behavior, while the Battery Care feature gives you more of a hard limit. Keep in mind that your BIOS may look different, but the general functionality is usually similar. Also, Adaptive Battery Optimizer is usually enabled by default.
- Open the Start menu.
- Hold layer On your keyboard, click the Performance and then Restart.
- Click TroubleshootingThen Advanced options.
- Choose UEFI firmware settings to access the BIOS.

How to limit battery charge on Surface laptops (and tablets)
Microsoft allows you to limit battery usage using the Surface app on its devices. This is usually enabled by default, but here's how to ensure it:
- Launch the Surface app. You can install it from the Microsoft Store.
- Check if the Smart charging Field says Currently at.
On some devices, smart charging may always be on and may not display this indicator.
- If not, expand the field by clicking.
- Click the button to enable smart charging.
Smart charging limits the maximum battery charge to 80% in most cases, but will stop if the battery frequently discharges below 20%.
Alternatively, most Surface devices also have an option in the BIOS settings called Enable battery limit modeThis will limit the battery charge to just 50%, which isn't ideal as it will use up a lot of the battery capacity when you need it. Most modern laptops have this set to 80%, so you get a good balance between battery life per use and longer life in the long run.

Battery warnings for other laptops
Since the above solutions are exclusive to the respective laptop manufacturers, there is a chance that your laptop is not listed here. However, if you want to prevent charging beyond a certain battery level, there are apps that can alert you when you reach 80% battery or any other level, allowing you to unplug the laptop. You cannot limit the charging capacity per sebut they might be useful if you want to at least keep a better eye on your battery usage. A great option is Battery Limiter.
After installing the app, simply drag the slider to set the maximum battery charge and you will hear an alarm when that number is reached.
Keep your battery healthy
Hopefully, Windows 11 will add such a feature in the near future that will work natively on all laptops, so you don't have to navigate through all sorts of different settings. Regardless, all of these methods work and cover most laptop brands you can find, so no matter what laptop you have, you can help extend its life by preserving its battery capacity. Laptops these days are powerful enough to last for many years, so preserving the battery is a great way to ensure you don't need a new one anytime soon.
