- Codenames pits two teams of agents against each other to uncover all of their agents in the field.
Codenames, the hit board game from Czech developers, er, Czech Games Edition, is coming to mobile devices! The game, which has received numerous awards including the prestigious Spiel Des Jahres, will be available on September 12th on iOS and Android. But what is Codenames and how does it work? Let's find out!
Codenames is, to put it simply, a guessing game. Obviously, trying to condense an entire board game into a paragraph is difficult, but essentially it is the job of two teams of agents (managed by spymasters) to select from a grid of words that they believe are the titular code names of agents, bystanders, or otherwise. Spymasters can offer clues, but it is up to the agents themselves to figure out which words their spymaster is referring to and avoid choosing bystanders, enemy agents, or the deadly assassin.
For example: The Spymaster says “Tree”, which ties into the code names “nut” and “bark” (since they are both related to trees). The team that manages to cover all their cards and figure out who is who first wins the game. Unless, of course, they touch the assassin card.
Double agent
Of course, these are the general outlines, but there’s a reason Codenames is so popular, and that’s because it hits the mark in being simple yet addictive. Bringing it to mobile has been a long process, but we can’t wait to see how Codenames fares when it releases on September 12th for Google Play and the iOS App Stores.
