Since I'm Flappy, it's my turn…

  • Video Game Phenomenon Flappy Bird Returns to Mobile Next Year
  • The Flappy Bird Foundation has acquired the rights to the popular song endless, er, flapper?
  • It's coming later this year, probably on PC

Pocket Gamer readers, I am unreasonably excited. The mobile gaming phenomenon Flappy Bird is officially returning! After a decade of absence and hundreds of somewhat shoddy imitations, it will return to grace iOS and Android in 2025. However, we will see it before then, later this year, most likely in browser form.

The resurrection comes courtesy of the aptly named Flappy Bird Foundation, which has acquired the official trademark along with the rights to the original game and the Piou Piou vs. Cactus character, who inspired the bird we all know and love.

Of course, it probably wouldn't be enough to just release Flappy Bird as is and expect it to be as successful as it was for a variety of reasons. But the main one is that people need their mobile games to do more than trade on an idea, especially one they played a decade ago. As soon as an endless runner is not up to par in 2024, sadly. So we can expect different game modes, characters, progression types, and even multiplayer challenges, if that's something you're into.

I am

I'm incredibly curious to see where this goes from here. While I have a lot of nostalgic love for the original Flappy Bird (competing with my friends in high school to see who was the best is definitely a fond memory), it was always a bit, well, trash. And yet, there was still something undeniably noticeable about its ridiculous popularity.

I've always wanted to keep trying to reach a new high score, even though it felt like everything in the game was working against me. Sometimes these things take off inexplicably, I think, captivating the entire world for a while until the creator finally shoots it down to the disappointment of the crowd. Can it happen a second time? My head says no, but my heart wants more joyful weeks where everyone is obsessed with trying to make a strange and adorable bird fly. Let's just hope people still care.

Flappy Bird is expected to return in some form during the third quarter of this year. However, we will have to wait until 2025 to see it released on iOS and Android, but it is happening!
