- Disney Step is a new location game based on augmented reality
- It features, of course, the Disney branding and collectibles
- Explore your hometown to find treasures and complete your collection
It's rare to see a major brand launch a mobile game that manages to go unnoticed, but today's topic certainly did. And that could be because Disney Step appears to be a Japan-only release (for now). But what is it? Well, let's see what we can glean from the official website and preview trailer.
So, right off the bat, we know that Disney Step is an AR game. If the logo and name weren't enough of a clue, the fact that it's based on a treasure hunt in “your city” that's a pretty good indication. It's also confirmed by official sources, though translated, so there's always room for error.
A quick look at the other official source I found, which is Japanese outlet Famitsu, shows a Pokémon Go-style interface with your character moving around a map representation of the local area towards points of interest. It doesn't appear to include any combat aspects, so we can reasonably assume it's geared towards a younger audience.
Walk this way
It’s interesting to see Disney Step debut in such a low-key way. But then again, Japan is supposedly one of the biggest markets for AR games, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s poised to debut there with an upcoming closed beta test. Hopefully we’ll hear more about it in the near future.
