Destiny Rising, a mobile spin-off of the popular Destiny franchise, may be in the works (or rather, still is) according to the latest rumor mill machinations. As spotted by a number of sources including GamingonPhone and TheGamePost, well-known insider and leaker Kurakasis has reported that the game, which is supposedly a collaboration between NetEase and Bungie, is still in the works.

That's a pretty bold claim, especially after lead developer Bungie was hit by a wave of layoffs earlier this year, which affected further DLC and updates. However, it's also not the first time we've seen NetEase's name linked to a potential spinoff, as was the case with the mega-hit Diablo Immortal.

NetEase also made a $100 million investment in Bungie way back in 2019, and rumors of a possible collaboration have been circulating since 2022.

For my part, I'm a little skeptical about this news. I think it's fair to say that Destiny is past its peak popularity, and the layoffs of recent months have exposed the problems of scaling a team of that size. NetEase has a history of this, but it's worth noting that Tencent, a similarly sized mega-developer, also abandoned work on a spin-off of the wildly popular Nier Automata, so even if Destiny Rising era once it was in development there is no guarantee that it would not be shelved.

So, is Destiny Rising still on the cards? Maybe, but it's a big maybe in my opinion.
