Shortly after Intel announced its Lunar Lake mobile processors, officially called Intel Core Ultra (Series 2), Microsoft has now announced the expansion of Copilot+ beyond the confines of Snapdragon processors. Since both AMD and Intel have now unveiled their next-generation processors with proper NPUs, you can expect the Copilot+ features to land on those PCs when Windows 11 version 24H2 hits non-Qualcomm PCs in November.
What is Copilot+?
Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs in May, along with the first wave of laptops with Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite processors. Coincidentally, these were also the first Copilot+ PCs, as they were the first to include processors with an integrated NPU of 40TOPS or more. However, it was always said that other brands would eventually follow suit.
Copilot+ includes a number of AI functions that run on the device, so you don't have to rely on the cloud. By using a dedicated processing unit, the NPU, these tasks can be performed locally without relying on the internet and without consuming too much power. Copilot+ features include:
- Live subtitles with real-time translation (English only)
- Advanced Windows Studio effects (such as filters and teleprompter eye contact)
- Contributor to Paint
- Image editor and redesign image in the Photos app
The first two features are self-explanatory, while the last two are essentially based on image generation. Cocreator in Paint is a feature that actually works on other PCs, but it runs in the cloud and costs credits. With a Copilot+ PC, you can generate images in Paint without having to worry about it. As for the Photos app, Image Creator is also easy to understand, while the Reframe Image feature lets you change the look of an image to a different artistic style.
Why is it coming later for Intel and AMD?

With AMD Ryzen AI 300 processors already available and Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) models coming later this month, you might be wondering why these features aren't available until November. The answer is that Arm-based PCs, like those with the Snapdragon X Elite, needed to launch with Windows 11 version 24H2, as that update included significant architectural improvements to make Windows run more smoothly on that hardware. So a version of that update was released early that was missing some features but already had Copilot+ on board.
AMD and Intel PCs don't need the optimizations in Windows 11 version 24H2, so laptops launching today will still ship with version 23H2. The full version of Windows 11 version 24H2 will be released in November and will include Copilot+ features, among many other improvements. You can presumably get the features early by joining the Windows Insider program on these new PCs.
Another big Copilot+ feature is of course Recall, which didn't make it to market after huge controversy surrounding its implementation and the resulting security implications. This records and saves everything you do on your PC and makes it searchable, so you can easily go back to something you were working on before. This feature will be available to Windows Insiders in October, with the full rollout yet to be announced.
